What Is Spaghettieis? The Unique Italian Pasta Ice Cream Taking the World by Storm

I.What is Spaghettieis? A “pasta” dish that is actually… gelato

Spaghettieis is a famous dessert in Germany, made from:
- Gelato or vanilla ice cream

- Pressed through a noodle-making tool to look like spaghetti

- Topped with strawberry sauce (like tomato sauce)

- Sprinkled with grated white chocolate (like Parmesan cheese)

-It looks like a plate of Italian spaghetti, but is actually 100% frozen dessert.
This is why Spaghettieis is called an “illusion dessert”, a dessert that deceives the eye.

II.The origins of Spaghettieis: a dessert created in Mannheim, Germany

Spaghettieis is not an Italian dish, but a German dish with Italian roots.
- In 1969, Dario Fontanella, the son of an Italian family living in Mannheim, created this dessert.

- He wanted to create a surprising dessert for children by transforming gelato into spaghetti shapes.

- As soon as it was launched, it quickly became a “national childhood favourite” in Germany.

To this day, Fontanella is still recognised as the father of Spaghettieis.

III. The structure of a classic Spaghettieis

A traditional portion of Spaghettieis consists of:
1) Vanilla gelato / vanilla ice cream
Pressed through a noodle-making machine to create a spaghetti-like shape.
2) Strawberry sauce
Representing tomato sauce and creating an eye-catching colour.
3) Grated white chocolate
It looks like Parmesan cheese sprinkled over Italian spaghetti.
4) Other toppings (customisable)
- Fresh strawberries

- Chocolate chips

- Crunchy nuts

- Nutella sauce

- Vanilla or caramel sauce

Thanks to this structure, the dessert is both fun to look at and delicious.

IV. Why has Spaghettieis become famous worldwide?
